Elder statesman and a former military Governor of Lagos State, Brig. General Mobolaji Johnson (retd.), has stressed the importance of a functional library in educational development.
Alongside other prominent Nigerians that included a former Managing Director of Unilever, Dr. Michael Omolayole, Johnson noted this on Friday when the City Profs Education Foundation laid the foundation of an e-library at the Ayangburen Primary School, Ikorodu, Lagos State.
Johnson, Omolayole and others, such as a former Vice Chancellor of the University of Benin, Prof. Alele Williams, are patrons of the foundation, which embarked on the Community Library Initiative as part of its effort to promote reading culture among pupils.
Johnson said he was delighted to be part of the epoch-making event, which, he said, was necessary for the use of children.
He said, “Education is the bedrock of any nation. This is what helped us while growing up.”
Also, Omolayole, who was represented by Mr. Oladipo Alla, congratulated Ikorodu for hosting the facility, saying it would deepen the progress that the people had made in education.
“It is essentially to inculcate in the pupils of primary and secondary schools the habit of reading voraciously. It is to promote the reading culture which leads undoubtedly to the acquisition of knowledge. We all know that knowledge is power. It is for this reason that the City Profs Academy has adopted the slogan, ‘Vote for the reading culture’,” he explained.
The Executive Secretary, Ikorodu Local Government, Hon. Sheriff Anipole, commended the foundation for what he described as its thoughtfulness, vision, commitment and selflessness. He also commended the patrons for their interest in knowledge sharing, which is the bed rock of every meaningful development and enduring advancement.
Anipole said the high premium the foundation placed on education had guided them into planning and executing such laudable projects in Lagos State and beyond.
The organisers of the event, attended by another educationist, Mrs. Olugbemiga Benson, note in a statement that apart from bringing the reading culture close to the people, especially young school children, the foundation believes that education broadens one’s horizon as nurtured minds will affect a nation’s development.
The statement adds, “The foundation has truly kept its words over the years with spirited individuals who are committed to humanity. Today, the CPA-CLI prototyped-model e-library, which started in Somolu, Bariga Lagos, has spread to other areas such as Ijebu-Mushin, Kosofe, Surulere, and the latest in Ikorodu.
