Abike Dabiri- Erewa was quite popular in Nigeria before she joined politics. She was a journalist with the Nigerian Television Authority (NTA) Lagos and she became famous with her innovative reportage on News line every Sunday, especially during the ‘MARY saga’ in 2008.Today, she is a legislator in the House of Representatives representing Ikorodu constituency in the National Assembly. In her second term in office she was appointed Chairman, House Committee on Diaspora Affairs, a new committee with the challenge of ensuring that Nigerians in Diaspora are integrated into developmental activities of their motherland. Recently, she was in Lagos to receive Ayoyemi Ajimatanrareje who is Miss Nigeria Florida. She spoke to CHRISTY ANYANWU.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">You are a very busy person, why are you in this gathering today?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">In things like this, where we have a Nigerian like Miss Nigeria Florida, what I think she has done is to celebrate the culture of Nigeria in America. That’s why one took time out to come and encourage her and people like her to continue to do what they are doing. You can see that she is giving back to the society with her title as Miss Florida. She’s not only propagating our culture in America, she is coming back to do things for the younger ones here in Nigeria. I’m very encouraged by what she is doing. At her age, she has done so much, any mother will be proud to have her around. So, she’s my adopted daughter.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">What are your views about Nigerians in Diaspora?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">There are Nigerians, especially our women that are amazing success stories even more than Americans. All we need to know is where our people are. We don’t have the data of our people in Diaspora. We are dealing with 16 million. We are supposed to have a database and then break them down in a way that it will be easy to locate Nigerians easily. So, let’s have a database, which is what we are trying to do right now. Even Ghana has it. You must know where your people are, and what they are doing. There is nowhere Nigerians are not extending, although you have a downside. You have Nigerians in jail for committing crime, for when 10 Nigerian</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">What are the challenges you have with Nigerians in Diaspora?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">There are many challenges. The first one is that we have man Nigerians in trouble in many parts of the world. We just came back from South Africa, we have more than 409 Nigerians in South Af-rican prisons and some should not be there. If you commit a crime, you will be punished for it but when you did nothing, maybe you are just guilty by association, there is no trial and you are stigmatized. Really, I think Nigeria should intervene and we are pushing for that. Second, we need to have a database of Nigerians in Diaspora to know exactly where our people are, what they are doing. We are talking about local content.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">There is nowhere Nigerians are not excelling. That is just the truth. If you want Nigerian experts in any field in the world, you can always get them, but we need to encur-age a synergy between Nigeria and the Nigerians in the Diaspora. We plan to establish a Diaspora commission. Alone, 26 countries have a full-fledged Diaspora ministr. Yet, we have the largest number apart from Brazil that has the largest number of blacks outside Africa. The next number will be Nigeria. We need to have that commission so that when people like Miss Florida comes here, the commission knows she is here and the commission knows you are there, and they can work with you. It’s going to be a full-fledged commission wher you can now tap into enormous resources. These are the immediate basic things that I think should be tackled.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">As part of your official duties, how do you feel when you are out there and found Nigerians doing all kinds of jobs?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">I think the first thing is, lets tackle the cause, which is unemployment. We met a Mass communication graduate in prison in South Africa. When I heard him speak, I know he is well educated. He was looking for a job and someone invited him to South Africa. When he got there, there was really nothing there and he finds a way to survive and got into trouble. The first thing is, lets solve the problem of unemployment in this country. I know there is greed, I also know there is desperation. Some people were brought back from Libya, 24 of them. Four of them are graduates of University of Nigeria Nsukka. Ghadafi was going to kill them.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">They went to look for jobs and they were actually working before they were arrested. So, we need to tackle unemployment. Government does not create jobs but government creates an enabling environment for jobs to be created. So, that has to be tackled. We are paying lip service and we are deceiving ourselves when we say we are creating jobs because we are not. I think that is the major thing. Again, a lot of awareness for the younger ones is necessary. Look at what she is doing. You can say she’s privileged but she could have been in America and gone into something else. So, we need a lot of awareness for the younger ones to know that it might not be greener out there because some are there out of ignorance.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">Take Cairo for instance, they have told the boys they are going to play football. They get there and there is no football to play. Now they are already stuck there. The devil has a workshop for idle hands and they want to do this and that to make ends meet and they get into trouble. Basically, there is need for awareness and we keep saying that if you commit a crime, you will be punished for it. There are some that are defendable and we are glad that we have been able to prevent such. We intervened in some and we succeeded. The next thing is to tap into these talents that are with Nigerians everywhere in the world. We have the best doctors in the world. In America, we have the best doctors that are Nigerians, and look at the state of our hospitals in Nigeria. A lot of things are happening, so we must have a Diaspora Commission. I hope we can, so that we won’t be left behind in Diaspora matters. There is going to be a regional summit sometime next year.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">So, how do you cope? I mean juggling your work as a legislator and travelling back and forth the globe.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">I think work is work. Whatever you are told to do, you just do it responsibly and ensure you put in your best. You are not going to work forever. You have to balance your family with your job, which is the most important challenge for a woman.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">So, how do you spend your day?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">The first thing is to pray. I’m a Muslim. The first thing I do is to pray in th morning and get to sleep again; I enjoy sleeping. Then get ready for work. I won’t say I have a typical day. Everyday is unpredictable, whether as a journalist or as a politician. But I always place my family first in whatever I do. Whatever I do, I will not sacrifice my family fo any other thing. I give them the priority. No point being successful in your career and not being able to raise successful children. I don’t have a structured day but the first thing is, you wake up an pry to your God for guidance till the rest of the day. And of course, as a woman, you must have to take care of yourself, do your spa, your facials, massage and relax.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">Do you miss anything about your career as a journalist?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">Of course, I miss television. Aah; I miss television, it’s the best job in the world. First thing I do is news. As am seeing you now, I’m wishing what I could do with you. I do miss it and I hope I will still do a few things in journalism, just for the fun of it.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">What are your plans for 2015?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">We take a step at a time. I’m a member of House of Representatives; I still have a lot of work to do. I have put in my best.</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">You dress nicely, what is the secret?</span></span></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> <span style="color: #222222; font-family: Georgia, Utopia, Palatino Linotype, Palatino, serif;"><span style="background-color: white; line-height: 21.559999465942383px;">Regalia makes my outfit. The bewilder traders had no place to do their business as the local government blocked the first gate entrance to Itoikin road and started erecting temporary stalls for the displaced traders; thus, sealing off that motor road.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> From the main gate along Salvation Army Primary School road into Sabo, emergency toll gates were mounted and every vehicle coming into the market was forced to pay N100 parking fee per day or N1000 for a year's sticker, something that was not the case before now.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> The junction leading to the Southern entrance of the market and the orange market, had been blocked with granite and sand, making it impossible for any vehicle to bring goods to that open arena for fruit sellers.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> Traders in that part of the market considered the new development a wicked new year gift, as the whole market had become like a torn coat. Controversy raged as the trader, murmured, grumbled; or cried out loud.<br /> They alleged that they were not duly consulted or carried along by the local government and their perishable goods, which in decent societies ought to be displayed and marketed in green houses, special melt and semi house/open stalls, was not factored into the plans of the local government.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> Just as abattoir are specially built, so also vegetable and fruit markets are specially designed, not in lock up shops or K-klamp apartments.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> Fresh from the controversies of last year, when the Anipole's government was accused of indiscriminate erection of stalls, unplanned nature of the market, conversion of open spaces and parts into other uses, including a pure water factory recently created in what used to be a motor park, and general lack of modernization of the market, Ikorodu News decided to contact the council boss on the recent issues at stake and other previous ones. He adopted the same attitude of apathy keeping mum, negating the principle and benefits of the freedom of information law in the country.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> On Friday March 7, 2014,following complaints by stakeholders in that market, a team of six reporters, camera men/women and editors, visited the market to see things for themselves.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> The once free-flowing market had turned into a disorganized setting. The access roads had been blocked and toll collectors were busy collecting money from every vehicle that entered the market.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> Mrs. Viola Egonu, a trader, told Ikorodu News that from what we gathered, Governor Fashola is not aware of what is happening in Sabo market. The pain we, the market women, are passing through, is unbearable for us because our customers can no longer come in to buy goods from us.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> Most of the times, our customers park outside the market premises or pay N100 toll to park inside. Traders must have a sticker of N I,000 on their vehicles and will also have to pay a sum of N100 as monthly due even after they might have gotten the sticker. As a market woman, I have to pass through the second gate, that is, if I have the sticker. .</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> The farmers are crying because in other states, their governments are encouraging them, but here in Sabo market, farmers can no longer bring in their farm produce and that is bringing hardship on us and we believe the governor is not aware of' it because we see him as a reasonable governor, who cannot do this to us.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> That is why we believe why this kind of construction work, without proper arrangement, ought not to have been made. We did not complain about the previous building, because there was no case of flood in the market. You should ask the lyaloja of Sabo market; she is aware of everything that is happening in the market.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> At the construction site, an aggressive bricklayer or labourer was hostile to inquiries posed by Ikorodu News crew, until a site engineer came to politely enlighten the journalists on the going on.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> At Iya Oloja's beautiful office inside the Sabo market, the market leader, Alhaja Taofikat Allison, was not present. Through a phone call, she invited the team of journalists to her residence at Anibaba area of Ikorodu Central Business District, where we had a 30 minute chat with the articulate leader, who was once a school head teacher.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> The lya Oloja washed her hands off the latest going on in the market saying, she was invited by the council and was told they wanted to carry out some development projects.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> Alhaja Allison said she is not the owner of any land that is now being reconstructed or housing a water factory instead of a Molue park it used to be. She told Ikorodu News that the Ugu vegetable sellers maintained a kind of autonomy; hence, they should liaise with the contractors to relieve them of their present suffering/handicaps .</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> The past chairman of the United Vegetable Farm Association in Sabo, who is also the incumbent chairman of lgbo traders union in Ayangburcn market, Chief Innocent Nwakpa, spoke with Ikorodu News Editor for over thirty (30) minutes, tracing the origin of the vegetable farmers from Otto in Iddo, where they traded</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> In the 70's and 80's, until 1989, when they decided to come back to their Ikorodu base, where they lived and farmed.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> According to him, they began settling along Agunbiade street until the Ikorodu local government, which felt they were messing up the place, gave them a place in Sabo market, then a virgin land. The portion for the vegetable traders was described as a den of criminals and a semi forest. The Igbo traders transformed the place and stayed put when Ikorodu indigenes, who had shops in the market, refused to trade in the market, preferring Lagos Island.</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> The local government, he said, gave all allocations of the place to the lgbo traders in 2007. They have now decided to displace these people, who had faithfully and patiently helped to make Sabo market to grow.Chief Nwakpa alleged that the council left all the other open space it could have constructed the new market and came to their own area because they have no voice and no one to defend them.<br /> By 2pm, on Monday, March 10, 2014, news reached our desk that a team of officials from Alausa visited the market few minutes ago to seal up the construction work the local government was executing. </div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> <br /> <span style="line-height: 1.4em;">Ikorodu News</span><span style="line-height: 1.4em;"> </span> gathered that complaints had reached several quarters, including the office of Iya Oloja General of Lagos State, the Lagos State Market Board and Environmental authorities, among others.<br /> Perhaps, these complaints prompted the intervention of the Lagos state government.<br /> By 3:30pm, we got a report that a team from Ikorodu council, including the council manager and others, had just left the market. They reportedly came to see the sealing off of the construction work by the superior authorities in Alausa.<br /> Observers are wondering what had become of the construction of a replica of Tejuosho model market, which the Ikorodu local government had proposed to build by partnership arrangement, the model/architectural design of which Ikorodu News published last year.<br /> Could it be that all the grandiose plans of the Anipole administration at lta-llewa old secretariat and Sabo were flukes?<br /> Why did the council choose only one portion of Sabo market for construction, when it had plans for total restructuring of the entire market? Is the accusation of discrimination against the lgbo traders in that market<br /> real or imagined?</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> Who authorized the sudden toll collection of N100 per vehicle in Sabo? To whom does the money go? What is the cost of that construction work that has now been halted? What was the completion period by the contractor, said to he Nzehruebu Ventures Nigeria Limited?</div> <div align="justify" style="background-color: white; color: #333333; font-family: georgia, 'times new roman', times, serif; font-size: 14px; line-height: 1.4em; margin-bottom: 16px;"> As long as what is going on in Sabo is still shrouded in secrecy on the part of the local government, it seems that the blame for indiscriminate construction of stalls will continue, even when Anipole's intention might be good and for public interest.</div>

Surprisingly, the Ministry of Works that is supposed to push the speed of work and scold the erring contractor seems to be defending the contractors by giving the excuse of rains on their behalf.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The questions on the lips of Ikorodu people are, "How did Arab contractors finish a more difficult assignment ahead of the Awolowo road contractor or is it true that the contractor, who is said to be well connected to the powers above, used the money for the job for political campaigns in Ondo State where he is said to come from?" <br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Is it also true that the contract sum may have been jacked up from N2.2 billion to accommodate some sharp practices?<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The ready answers by many road users are that the Awolowo road contract is being badly executed. <br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />It is like giving a bricklayer's job to a tailor to execute; hence, people are now calling on the state government to revoke this contract and give it to a committed contractor or else, people will conclude it is another evidence of corruption at work.</span></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;"><b>Obafemi Awolowo road youth write BRF over contractor's shoddy work</b></span></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white; font-family: Arial, Helvetica, sans-serif;">The youths of Obafemi Awolowo road from Ota-Ona junction to Oke-Ota Ona, Ikorodu, under the aegis of Youth Advocacy For Good Governance, Ikorodu has finally given SEG MASHEN NIGERIA LIMITED, the construction company handling the reconstruction and expansion of Obafemi Awolowo road, Ikorodu to leave the project completely so that government can bring in a better construction company to handle it. <br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Early this year, the Lagos State House Committee on Works led by Hon. Rotimi Olowo, with Hon. Sinai O.B. Agunbiade and others, as well as directors in the state ministry of works and infrastructures visited the site during the House Committees' oversight function of monitoring projects across the state. They all condemned the shoddy work by the construction company.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Rather than improve as pledged early in the year when the honourable members visited, which calmed the frayed nerves of the protesting youths and residents of the areas, the company did not fare any better almost 10 months after. SEG MASHEN had abandoned the project on several occasions only to appear again at will and give all sorts of excuses at the detriment of the residents and other road users.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The situation is now getting out of hand as the youths are now getting restive. Oriwu Sun reliably gathered that Hon. Agunbiade and other senior residents might be unable to hold the youths back again as they have been doing for months. <br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The youths, during their protest in October, 2012, asked the construction company to leave and allow government to bring in a more competent construction company.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />SEG MASHEN, which has its company on the Island, the youths reliably informed Oriwu Sun, is a Water Engineering Company and not a Civil Engineering Company, which is why the work is been shoddily handled. The company itself recognizes its lack of competence when few weeks ago, it replaced the old project manager with a new one, Mr. Owolabi, who admitted fundamental problems which arose from the bad work being carried out by the company and why the old manager was removed.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Meanwhile, the youths of the area, under the umbrella of YOUTH ADVOCACY FOR GOOD GOVERNANCE, IKORODU, comprising Grammar school, Ojoru, Water works, Ota-Ona, Erunwen, Itamaga, Radio Area, Agunbiade Close, Dejuwogbo and Next Generation youths, have petitioned the Governor, Mr. Raji Babatunde Fashola and copied Lagos State House Of Assembly, HRH, Oba (Dr) Oyesfusi, CON and other quarters on the plights of the residents due to activities of the construction company. They called for their intervention before they are pushed to the wall and decide to react.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />In their petition, the youths stated that the company is adopting a snail-pace like under a false impression that it is the one financing the project. "This company started by adopting a snail style of approach to the construction of the road, behaving as if they were only doing the people of Ikorodu a favour with the construction of the road. They presented a picture of father Christmas with false impression that they are bankrolling the project."<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />"Your Excellency, we sadly want to let you know that the road project has been abandoned without any explanation to the people of the area in particular and entire users of the road in general. May we also let you know that the road claims lives on daily basis. Besides, the men of the underworld have now found the road as an opportunity to unleashed terror on our people", the youths said in their petition.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Another difficulty stated by the youths in their petition was that the shoddy work on the road is causing serial accidents where lives are been lost daily. "If vehicles do not run into walls, they will plunge into stream or drainage and when it is not vehicle, it is Okada and whenever this happens, it leaves the people with gnashing of teeth as scores of lives are lost."<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />The youths, who also claimed in their petition that they are aware that the company got the contract to the tune of N4billion from government's cover, queried why the company that was paid with tax payers money will be causing the people untold hardship and pains. They then warned that they are writing the petition to the government, especially the Governor, believing that there will be quick intervention in order to forestall the youths going on a rampage and causing bad image for the government and ACN, the party most of them belong and have been supporting.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Meanwhile, Oriwu Sun learnt that the company, having learnt about the planned rally/protest of the youths on October Saturday 13th, 2012 became jittery and reported at the police station that the youths of the area are planning to sack them from the site violently. <br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />This resulted in the invitation of the leadership of the Youth Advocacy For Good Governance, Ikorodu, led Mr Okoko Olalekan, chairman YAFGG.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />At the station, Oriwu Sun reliably gathered that the police made it known to the construction company led by its Project manager, Mr. Owolabi that they cannot arrest or detain the youths for planning to exercise their rights against the shoddy work being done by the construction company on the road and enjoined them to go back to its host community and make peace. In the same manner, the youths were also advised by the police to conduct themselves in peaceful and good manner as police will not tolerate any action that threatens the public peace.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade, on arriving at the scene, prevailed on the youths and residents numbering about 500, to shelve the protest. A meeting with the company later held in its place.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />At the meeting were Hon. S.O.B Agunbiade, Hon. Olosugbo Aziz Jimoh, (leader Ikorodu legislative arm and Councilor of the ward), Mr. Okoko Olalekan, (the Advocay Group chairman), Comrade Adeleke Akadiri, (chairman National Youths Council of Nigeria, Ikorodu chapter), Alhaji Elkanga, Alhaji Savage and a host of other stakeholders in the community with the youths and residents.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />At the meeting, the company project manager, Mr. Owolabi, pleaded with the youths and residents of the communities and accepted that there are fundamental errors which led to the removal of the old project manager, Mr. Bello and his replacement. He assured that the company is aware of the deadline given to it by the state government, which is December 15, 2012.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Meanwhile, the residents of the area have asked the state government to allow its engineers from the ministry of works and infrastructures to constantly inspect the project as the company is doing sub-standard work. They alleged that the slaps covering the drainage are not supported with iron which has resulted into several accidents as people walk on it.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />In a interview with Hon. Ola Animashaun, former member, Lagos State House of Assembly, also a resident of the area, he queried the idea behind the government contracting the road half way instead of contracting the entire stretch of the road to competent contractor. "If you go to Itamaga today, you would not believe that you are still in Lagos State and I don't see the rationale behind awarding half of the length of the road and abandoning the other half to rot completely."</span></div>

Oyefusi (CON,GCOI), the Ayangburen of Ikorodu, where they bitterly complained about the treatment being meted out to them by the men of Nigerian police in Ikorodu.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Presenting their case before Oba Ayangburen, Olori Muyibat Oyefusi, High Chief Kabir Sotobi (the Odofin of Ikorodu) and Chief Banjoko (Bobaseye of Ikorodu), the MOALS Chairman, Mr Kayode Jimoh Pashoku (Jendo), said that their men are been harassed, molested and ill treated by the police in Ikorodu, especially the officers of Shagamu road and Ipakodo police stations.</span></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <br /></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVhh3kJ5L6bE4XqqGc5rPURCvZviktxunvfyNttfHCTHBm0n_BAx0thkDMc8INq-iovHnb4VpEPqPk3hnkIVaF8N2zPaAzF9tu5TlAcP7lOUog9kx_RGXmKMIhRFz6QRuB4dK-TtDVhHV2/s1600/okada3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: left; display: inline !important; float: left; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-right: 1em; text-align: center;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjVhh3kJ5L6bE4XqqGc5rPURCvZviktxunvfyNttfHCTHBm0n_BAx0thkDMc8INq-iovHnb4VpEPqPk3hnkIVaF8N2zPaAzF9tu5TlAcP7lOUog9kx_RGXmKMIhRFz6QRuB4dK-TtDVhHV2/s1600/okada3.jpg" /></a><span style="background-color: white;">The MOALS chairman said their association had petitioned the Lagos State House of Assembly through the representative of Ikorodu Constituency I, Hon. Sinai O.B. Agunbiade, where the illegal activities and brutality of the officers of Nigerian police in Ikorodu were made known.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Pashoku accused police officers of demanding N20, 000 before seized okadas could be released to his men. A visibly angry chairman also informed the Kabiyesi of how the police officers, especially from Shagamu road police station, used stick and iron on riders in trying to seize their motorcycles. </span></div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXA31ZRYfcySe8btze7Xt5y8gpyp6FDRjkLm5vBbJOrGzAWkSVi8-PKluIWsiwjTjC8czqCp7ylbFSHntOv_tI_RaQDAbEDsBBqGnr4pxcfL7QNBsx8x1HRd4r_LM2rJ8naCO_Mf6vMOd8/s1600/okada4.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="160" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXA31ZRYfcySe8btze7Xt5y8gpyp6FDRjkLm5vBbJOrGzAWkSVi8-PKluIWsiwjTjC8czqCp7ylbFSHntOv_tI_RaQDAbEDsBBqGnr4pxcfL7QNBsx8x1HRd4r_LM2rJ8naCO_Mf6vMOd8/s1600/okada4.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white;"><br /></span></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white;">"The police has turned us to ATM, where they can make money easily. They demand for huge amount that we don't have and make lives unbearable for common man. We are tired of their brutality and extortion and before the situation turns ugly, we felt we should protest to necessary quarters", said Pashoku. The 'okada' chairman also pleaded for the referred monarch's intervention in asking the state government to lift ban on some roads within the town – Ayangburen, Ireshe, Ikorodu-Igbogbo, Ogolonto-Ipakodo, Alhaji street, Ebute-Ibeshe and Awolowo roads. Pashoku argued that all the fuel stations in Ikorodu are located on the banned roads, which make refilling difficult for riders.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Speaking, the Odofin of Ikorodu berated the riders for storming the residence of the Ikorodu monarch without prior notification but assured them of the royal father's intervention. <br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Olori Oyefusi, also speaking, condemned the attitudes of okada riders on the road, especially situations where they don't accord the monarch's vehicle respect on the road. To correct their nuisance, Olori suggested that the union leadership should from time to time organize public lecture to educate their men. She also assured that the royal family will engage necessary authorities on their complaints.</span></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; font-family: Verdana; font-size: 12px; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white;"><br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />In his own reaction, Oba Oyefusi thanked the riders for protesting to him and not taking the law into their hands. The monarch, who enjoined the protesters to continue to be law abiding, also assured them of his intervention with the leadership of police in Ikorodu and other necessary government agencies.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Marching back to the Ayangburen palace from the Lowa residence of Oba Oyefusi, it was a complete stand still for vehicles plying Lowa, Etunrenren and Ayangburen roads as the riders completely took over the roads. At the palace, they had a rally where some of the Okada riders executive members addressed the gathering, which was close to 2000.</span></div>

Agura residents want BRF'S intervention on health care

<h2 style="color: #333333; margin: 0px 0px 10px; padding: 0px;"> <img class="alignleft" height="384" src="http://www.oriwusun.com/2013/january/images/agura.jpg" style="border: 0px; float: left; line-height: 1.5em; margin: 4px 10px 5px 0px; padding: 0px;" width="640" /></h2> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">The residents of Agura, a satellite town off Ijede area of Ikorodu division have made passionate appeal to both the state and local government to intervene and provide primary health care facilities in their town, and boost the number of medical personnel in the existing center.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Speaking with Ikorodu News recently, a resident of the area, Mrs. Abolade Abike said that as a fast growing town, Agura lacks social amenities like good health centre, and a pharmacy where people could easily procure their drugs. She lamented that after nurses have prescribed drugs for patients, they have to walk several miles before they can buy them.<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Another resident who did not want her name in print said that the health center has no residential Doctors and has only one residential nurse, who attends to all cases at night. A nursing mother, who identified her name as Mama Malik, narrating her ordeal at the health center when she was about to deliver, said that only one nurse attended to her during the night because others had already closed for the day. According to her, there was no light at the clinic and no generating set and the only nurse around had to be assisted by her husband.</span></span></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">She then urged the government to intervene and provide qualified nurses and a pharmacy to serve the community. In her words: "It is unfair that after going for treatment, one would be told to go outside to buy drugs and the cost of buying these drugs outside is very high."<br style="margin: 0px; padding: 0px;" />Aishat Idowu, another resident commended the efforts of the nurses but observed that they needed necessary medical equipment to carry out their duties fully. She said that in most cases, when you go to the centre for treatment, you would be referred to another place which was either Igbogbo or Ijede General Hospital for a test or scan.</span></span></div> <div align="justify" style="color: #333333; line-height: 1.5em; margin-bottom: 10px; padding: 0px;"> <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="font-family: Times, Times New Roman, serif;">On her part, the chief nursing officer of the center, Mrs. Fatoye, said the nurse are doing their best to treat the people of the community well while the patients are encouraging them to do more by adhering to their advice on health matters. According to her, the clinic gives out drugs but not the essential ones because there is no pharmacy. She appealed for more nursing staff to reduce the workload on the only female residential nurse.</span></span></div>

This has however boomeranged as three pronged attack from a community Baale, Ikorodu General hospital and Ikorodu legislators will soon flush out all marketers of caskets and coffins who flagrantly display these symbols of death along TOS Benson road. This is because they are causing fear and psychological traumas on patient visiting the general hospital, and constituting a nuisance value to the environment.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> A petition by the Baale of Ojogbe, complaint by medical authorities at the general hospital and intra feud among the casket builders/sellers recently, necessitated a legislation by Ikorodu local government to send packing all those displaying, building and selling coffins along old Beach road.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The Ikorodu local council legislative arm recently passed a resolution asking the council environment department to dislodge the coffin sellers along Otunba Theophilus O. S. Benson Avenue, especially those that had encroached on government land and are displaying their caskets outside,</div> <div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"> <a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitgq9Efjk5KUBaTheOwAOl4yiYUCpImY92VhYO_Y1SjVMw2LWJpTchDCWhPUNxxMcRkGqdhMA-a9GVibKBSDflJlDAlbQiHoOMUQteEt47nv4a1igWPQUvE0Q07KLv3AEP3Ge69WN5znPv/s1600/cof3.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEitgq9Efjk5KUBaTheOwAOl4yiYUCpImY92VhYO_Y1SjVMw2LWJpTchDCWhPUNxxMcRkGqdhMA-a9GVibKBSDflJlDAlbQiHoOMUQteEt47nv4a1igWPQUvE0Q07KLv3AEP3Ge69WN5znPv/s1600/cof3.jpg" width="640" /></a></div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The Baale Ojogbe, Chief Bayo Olomo had petitioned the Ikorodu legislative arm complaining about the coffin sellers constituting nuisance and disturbing public peace. The medical director of Ikorodu General Hospital, Dr. Olukoya had also made similar complaints to the legislators during a visitation to the hospital few months back.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Dr. Olukoya had complained at the meeting with the legislators that the unrestricted display of coffins can result into psychological problem for sick patients going to or coming from the hospital. The medical officer therefore enjoined the council to see to the correction of the situation.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> In a chat with Ikorodu News, Chief Olomo complained that he had met with the casket sellers several times on the need to stop constituting public nuisance by the unrestricted display of their coffins and the habit of doing the furnituring work in the open, but all fell into deaf ears. The Baale also accused them of fetish activities.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> According to the community leader, "Recently, their unbearing attitudes got to a level when they used juju against each other. One of them called Lolo stepped on juju laid on the ground and developed swollen leg which later resulted into peeling of the flesh on his leg to the extent that his bone was revealing. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> After consultations, I learnt the attack came from his co-sellers and I confronted them. To my surprise, they made revelations that there had been such occurrences among them and I threatened to report them to Kabiyesi and other traditional institutions if the guy was not back on his feet in four weeks", said Baale Olomo.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> "You will be surprised that the man is back on his feet, after the suspect promised to take the victim to somewhere he can be cured," Olomo confirmed.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Chief Olomo also revealed that recently, misunderstanding over a small portion of government land between two of their members-Daisi and Korede, degenerated into public disturbances and Daisi ended up shattering the windscreen of a vehicle parked at a nearby mechanic workshop. Daisi has since refused to replace the windscreen.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Ikorodu News also learnt from some members of the carpentary association in Ikorodu that most of the coffin sellers refused to belong to the association and whenever association officials are there to enforce the union's rule, they (the coffin sellers) turn violent. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> The coffin sellers' attitude, we learnt, has become unbearable for their leader too, Mr. Goke Oretoye, who had already complied with the public outcry by operating his casket business in a covered shop.</div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> When Ikorodu News approached the coffin sellers with the Baale of Ojogbe, Chief Bayo Olomo, they did not deny any of the allegations made by the Baale. </div> <div style="text-align: justify;"> Meanwhile, the Ikorodu Legislative arm, led by Hon. Aziz Olosugbo, after considering the petitions and views of other stakeholders in the community, has passed a resolution directing the council's environment department to dislodge the coffin sellers and if they cannot, to invite the state ministry of environment to carry out the dislodgement.</div>
